Location

Kenya is located in Eastern Afrika bordering the north western India Ocean between Tanzania and Somalia. It has a total land area of 569,250 sq km and borders Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia Uganda and Tanzania.


Kenya is a land of much biodiversity with low plains, to mountain plateaus, semi arid deserts to lush rainforests. It is also home to the second tallest mountain in Afrika, Mount Kirinyaga (we can see this mountain from the Lavenda Springs site) and the Great Rift Valley runs through the country from top to bottom, while the equator bisects it through the centre into two equal parts.


Kenya has a population of approximately 30 million people. The people are a diverse ethnic mix with many tribes represented. Kiswahili is the official language with English spoken widely throughout the country, as well as 61 tribal languages.

 

PROJECT LOCATION

The Lavenda Springs Main Project is located 191 kilometres north-west of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya (it takes about 3 – 4 hours to drive there). It is in a rural, semi arid region in the Nyandarua (Aberdare) Mountain Ranges called Gatarakwa, in Kieni West division of Nyeri district, Central Province. As well as surrounding villages, the surrounding population is approximately 15,000 to 25,000 people.
