VOCATIONAL EDUCATION
We are working at establishing vocational training for young people and adults within the community. With this training they will be able to generate an income and be productive members of the community. Training in the areas of building, carpentry and tailoring have already begun. Computer training will also be offered to everyone through out the project. We have some apprentices who have joined Lavenda and are currently working towards gaining skills in carpentary and building.
LIBRARY
Many individuals and schools have donated of thousands of books, tapes, CDs, DVDs and other learning material. With these gifts, Lavenda Springs has opened a library to service the school and also the entire community. In the future it is envisaged that this facility will also have computer and internet access.
ADULT LITERACY
There is a high rate of illiteracy in this area, so an Adult Literacy program has begun with groups run in the library. This course is run through the local governments Adult Literacy program and the government provides us with the teacher. The program has been very successful.
WOMENS GROUPS
In 2004 we started our first community women’s group. It has proven to be very successful and the women have already started a number of projects. The funds generated are put back into the women's group. The next target is to fund women’s small business projects. The women’s group is also looking into the development of solar ovens, which would be very helpful in combating the environmental degradation brought about by excessive deforestation. About 90% of the community depends on firewood for cooking and warming themselves. Lavenda is also working with a network of six women's groups in this area to assist with micro finance business opportunities.
